"Guatemalan jade has an especially rich history in Mesoamerica. Jade from Guatemala was prized by the Olmec as early as approximately 1500 BCE and remained deeply important to later Maya and other Mesoamerican cultures. After the Spanish conquest, knowledge of Guatemala's jade sources was largely lost outside local communities until deposits were rediscovered in the 1970s."
